The 2022 Commonwealth Games is underway after the opening ceremony took place last night to kick off 10 days of intense sporting action. Celebrities and musicians welcomed the athletes from across the Commonwealth in a three hour long performance that showcased the best and brightest from the West Midlands. More than 5,000 athletes representing 72 nations and territories will compete in the games with 280 medals available to be won.

16 of those are on offer on day one as gymnastics, triathalon and netball all get underway on Friday. Olympic silver medallist Alex Yee made it gold in the men’s triathlon for the first medal of the Games for Team England. Fellow Tokyo hero Georgia Taylor-Brown goes in the women’s race.

Women’s T20 cricket makes its Commonwealth debut with a huge match as Australia take on India at Edgbaston before England battle Trinidad and Tobago to kick off their netball defence around midday. There is track cycling action from the Lee Valley VeloPark in London - including the men’s and women’s team pursuit and the team sprint finals - before the action moves to the pool and the first of the swimming medals are decided later this evening.

Follow all the latest updates from the Commonwealth Games below:

Flora Duffy seems back to her best, she’s a long way out in front of Georgia Taylor-Brown now and keeps increasing her lead.

2.5km to go and Duffy is closing in on the gold medal. 16 seconds separate the gold and silver medal positions.

The gap is growing between Flora Duffy and Georgia Taylor-Brown. It’s up to seven seconds now and the English women isn’t looking very comfortable out there.

The Olympic champion from Bermuda is leading the race and seems in total control.

In the men’s triathlon earlier today New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde was given a 10-second penalty because his helmet wasn’t properly left in the plastic container next to the bike rack.

Georgia Taylor-Brown and Flora Duffy both arrive at the second trasition and will be absolutely certain that their transitions are perfect.

Taylor-Brown takes longer to switch to the running shoes and Duffy ekes out a couple of seconds as she head off in the lead.

Duffy and Taylor-Brown continue to alternate at the front of the race. They’ve got one more lap of Sutton Coldfield to go before a 5km race to the end of the course.

Two laps of the 20km course down with Flora Duffy leading the way just ahead of Georgia Taylor-Brown. These two favourites have opened up a 16 second gap over Beth Potter.

England’s Lewis Richardson defeated Wales’ Harris Khan by unanimous decision to progress to the last 16 in the men’s middleweight division.

The Colchester-born boxer, who picked up a silver medal at this year’s European Championships, opened up a sizeable advantage in the opening two rounds and Khan’s chances were not helped after he picked up an official warning from the referee in the second round which saw him deducted a point.

Richardson, one of the favourites to win gold, will now face Uganda’s Yusuf Nkobeza on Sunday for a place in the quarter-finals.

Scotland’s Beth Potter leads the way out of the water and strings together a good transition onto the bike. Bermuda’s Flora Duffy exits the lake in second place with England’s Georgia Taylor-Brown in third.

Potter is the first onto the bike course with a pack of four women chasing her down.

Ashleigh Gardner rescued gold medal favourites Australia against India as women’s T20 cricket made its Commonwealth Games debut at Edgbaston on Friday.

The reigning 20 and 50-over world champions’ top order had initially faltered in reply to India’s 154 for eight, with Alyssa Healy and Meg Lanning among those to lose their wickets cheaply.

But Gardner steadied Australia with an unbeaten 52 off 35 balls, as leg-spinner Alana King hit the winning runs off Deepti Sharma to seal a three-wicket win with an over to spare.

Edgbaston looked to be at around 50 per cent of its 25,000 capacity for an attractive opening match between 2020’s T20 World Cup finalists.

Australia are favourites to win the gold medal in the inaugural women’s T20 cricket at Birmingham 2022

Alex Yee took home the gold for England this morning in the men’s triathlon and Georgia Taylor-Brown is getting her event underway.

The competitors leap into the water in Sutton Park for the first of the three disciplines. The course is favourable to the stronger cyclists and runners so it isn’t necessary to lead the way coming out of the water.
